HDR (High Dynamic Range) image files, often saved with the .hdr extension, store a much wider range of brightness and color information than a standard JPEG or PNG. They're widely used in 3D rendering, visual effects, and photography workflows that need realistic lighting.
Converting to the HDR format is common when preparing environment maps or lighting references for 3D software such as Blender, Maya, or Unreal Engine, or when combining several exposures into a single high-dynamic-range image for further editing.
Because standard photos are captured with limited dynamic range, converting a regular JPEG or PNG to HDR won't recover detail that was never captured in the original shot — it simply repackages the existing data into the HDR container so it can be used by HDR-aware software.
